Background of the Study

The provision of home care nursing for elderly patients has gained global recognition as an effective way to manage chronic diseases, enhance the quality of life, and reduce hospital admissions. In developed countries, home-based nursing care is a well-integrated part of healthcare systems, allowing elderly individuals to receive medical attention in the comfort of their homes. However, in Nigeria, home care nursing is still underdeveloped, particularly in rural areas where healthcare facilities are scarce (Afolabi & Ojo, 2024).

In rural areas of Niger State, elderly patients often face significant challenges in accessing healthcare due to poor infrastructure, a shortage of healthcare professionals, and financial constraints. Home care nursing has the potential to bridge this gap by providing personalized healthcare services to elderly patients in their homes. However, the effectiveness of home-based nursing care in these rural areas has not been extensively studied (Abubakar et al., 2023).

Home care nursing involves services such as chronic disease management, wound care, medication administration, mobility support, and palliative care. While this model of care is beneficial, challenges such as inadequate funding, a lack of trained home care nurses, and cultural perceptions about in-home medical treatment may hinder its success. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of home care nursing for elderly patients in rural Niger State, identify existing challenges, and propose strategies for improving its implementation.

Statement of the Problem

Elderly individuals in rural areas of Niger State often struggle to access healthcare due to distance, financial barriers, and the limited availability of geriatric healthcare services. Hospital visits can be stressful and costly, making home care nursing a viable alternative for ensuring continuity of care. However, the effectiveness of home-based nursing care in these communities is unclear due to the lack of structured programs, inadequate supervision, and insufficient trained personnel (Ibrahim & Sani, 2024).

There is a need to evaluate whether home care nursing services meet the healthcare needs of elderly patients in rural Niger State. If properly implemented, home care nursing could reduce hospital readmissions, improve health outcomes, and enhance the overall well-being of elderly individuals. This study will assess the effectiveness of current home care nursing practices and explore ways to improve healthcare delivery to elderly patients in rural areas.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of home care nursing in meeting the healthcare needs of elderly patients in rural Niger State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by home care nurses in delivering services to elderly patients.
  3. To propose strategies for improving home care nursing services in rural areas.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is home care nursing in providing medical and supportive care for elderly patients in rural Niger State?
  2. What challenges do home care nurses face in delivering healthcare services to elderly patients?
  3. What strategies can improve the effectiveness of home care nursing for elderly patients in rural areas?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Home care nursing significantly improves the health outcomes of elderly patients in rural Niger State.
  2. The lack of trained personnel negatively affects the effectiveness of home care nursing services.
  3. Implementing structured home care programs will enhance healthcare delivery for elderly patients in rural areas.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on home care nursing services in rural areas of Niger State. Limitations may include difficulty in accessing data on private home care providers and challenges in obtaining self-reported patient health outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Home Care Nursing – The provision of healthcare services to patients in their homes rather than in hospital settings.
  2. Chronic Disease Management – The long-term medical care of patients with persistent illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis.
  3. Palliative Care – Specialized healthcare aimed at relieving suffering and improving the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses.
